Guide to Summer Camp
For your kids first overnighter
By Jennifer Eblin
Going away to summer camp can be exciting and scary for kids, especially going to an overnight camp. You can lessen your children's stress or anxiety by doing a few things before your child heads off.
Start Planning
Start by choosing a summer camp that fits your child's likes and dislikes. A little boy who loves playing soccer, or a girl who loves riding horses might feel left out and homesick at a camp that focuses on arts and crafts. Try to find a camp that focuses on something your child likes, and let them get involved in picking out a summer camp.
For many children this will be their first time spending an extended period of time away from home. You need to make sure your child realizes this, and is comfortable being away from home. My niece was ready to go to an overnight camp when she was eight, but my nephew just turned ten and still shows no signs of wanting to go to camp. It depends on each child when they're ready for an overnight camp, and you shouldn't push them to go away for the summer unless they actually want to go. How will you feel if you have to drive and pick them up in less than a week?
Preparation
Help your children prepare for camp by packing some of their favorite items to help with homesickness. Let them take a few family pictures, a cherished teddy bear, and maybe even a book you read together. Having some things around to remind them of home will help the kids remember that they aren't alone, and can go home if they need.
Plan ahead for special visits to camp, and try to aim for a once a month visit. It may seem like too much, or not enough but it will help the child adjust to camp but know that you will be back soon to see them.
Try to get an advance copy of the daily activities at the camp, and go over it with your child. See if there's anything they feel uncomfortable about, and work out alternative plans if there's something your child can't do. Knowing that you are trying to help can be a big comfort to kids.
Summer camp can be a scary time for kids, but it can also be an exciting time. Try to play up the exciting elements by showing your child the fun activities planned for the summer, and asking what they are most excited about. Focus on making them as comfortable as possible before going away for the summer, and encourage your child to make new friends and enjoy the most of their summer.
