Helping Your Child at School

Avoid anxiety

By Lili Melton

Talking to teenagers about difficulties in school can be a dilemma for many parents. Frequently children do not want to communicate and do not know how to ask for help; and if teens do, parents do not know where to get assistance. Parents need to understand how to identify when children are having trouble in school, understand emotions children may be experiencing, and recognize when a tutor may be the right choice to help the parent and the child with both academics and self-esteem.

Identifying Signs of Troubles in School

· Low Grades. When children earnestly work, cannot find time to work, or are completing work and not turning in homework, which results in lower grades, some type of problem is being experienced.

· Distracted Often. When children are distracted and cannot complete their class work or their schoolwork, underlining issues need to be addressed.

· Experiences Boredom. Teens who frequently complain of being bored in school are possibly suffering from a learning dilemma - gifted and need to be challenged or a learning disability - and need extra considerations.

· Poor Attitude. When teens are not interested in school, do not care about school work, but do care about other areas of their life - video games, computers, sports this indifference may be concealment from troubles in school.

Understanding Emotions

Parents can help with:

· Empathy. Because children may already feel vulnerable, understanding the thoughts and emotions of teens, will allow parents to empathize with their child.

· Nonjudgment. Children who are experiencing troubles already are judging themselves and may feel overwhelmed. Asking children to talk express their feelings, concerns, thoughts about troubles they are experiencing in a nonjudgmental approach will lead to honesty.

· Love and Concern. More importantly, continual love, concern, and understanding of children's needs are crucial because children need to know their troubles can be overcome. Teens also need to know they are still loved and cared for regardless of the troubles.

Tutoring Assistance

When the signs have been identified and children's emotions are understood, the best course of action may be tutoring service. Tutoring provides optimal learning experiences because private tutors and tutoring services specialize in assisting learners with specific skills in areas of precise need while honing the child's strengths. The end result is relief from the anxiety brought on by taking tests because confidence about those once troubling areas is now relieved. Detailed lessons and one-to-one teaching will guide to positive academic achievements and a sense of success - significantly improving children's self-esteem.
