Kids and Technology

Know your limit

By Elitehacker

We live in a very technologically advanced era with technology becoming a normal part of our society, so instead of fighting it we should be embracing it. Like many things a child's access to technology should be controlled and well supervised. Education is the key, and children should be how to use technology safely and constructively. If exposed to them in a controlled, regulated and well supervised manner, it benefits kids greatly to have access to the latest gadgets.

Kid-Friendly Gadgets

A child having a mobile phone does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. If they learn how to use these devices responsibly at a young age then it will prevent problems developing in the future. The best way is to put the child on a prepaid plan so you can put a quota on their expenditure. If they exceed the quota then they will have to live without it until the next period comes, and that way the child is taught how to manage and responsibly use phone credits.

The World Wide Web

Likewise, the internet should be exposed to a child from a young age. Being computer illiterate is a major disadvantage when trying to find a job so it will greatly benefit children if they learn from a young age. Children should be taught how to surf responsibly and be able to identify online dangers and threats.

Being able to send E-mails with the correct format and language is a very attractive skill for prospective employers. Being able to set up and configure the internet router or hub is another useful skill; children learn very quickly when they are exposed to something. It is vital to note that technology is not your foe and like anything it can detrimental to over indulge, that applies to everything not just technology.

The Cons

The problem with spending too much time in front of screens does not arise because of technology but rather it is the fault of the parents. There should be a set limit as to when and how technology should be used and that regime should be in place at an as early age as possible so a child can develop a habit or routine. It is the parent's responsibility to dictate how technologies like television and computers should be used.

Technology is a wonderful tool and there is no question that it will benefit kids to be exposed to it at an early age, the problem does not rest with the latest gadgets but rather the failure of parents to regulate their children's use of them. It is unhealthy for kids to have the latest gadgets unsupervised. Children needs to be supervised when they go out or playing in the park, so what makes access to the latest gadgets any different?
